A harness can only work as intended when the size, adjustment, and design suit the individual dog. Manufacturer size charts are a starting point, not a substitute for checking the harness on the dog.
Measure before choosing
Use a flexible tape and follow the brand's measurement diagram. Record measurements rather than relying on breed or weight alone. Dogs with similar weights can have very different chest and neck proportions.
Run the movement check
- Confirm each buckle is fully closed and every strap lies flat.
- Check that straps do not sit in the armpits or rub behind the front legs.
- Watch the dog walk, turn, sit, and lower the head.
- Look for shifting, twisting, restricted stride, coughing, or skin irritation.
Recheck regularly
Fit can change with growth, coat changes, weight changes, washing, and normal strap movement. Puppies and newly adopted dogs need especially frequent checks. Replace damaged buckles, stretched webbing, and worn attachment points rather than attempting an unsafe repair.
